How To Style 3 Ways: Wide-Leg Jeans

we slowly say goodbye to sweat sets and welcome pre-COVID favorites back into our closets, it’s no surprise that cult classic pieces like denim have been one of the first to spike in a new way. You may have read one of my previous blog posts on the latest denim trend: Wide-Leg Jeans. In case you missed it, I talk about how Gen Z has recently declared skinny jeans “out” and non-skinny jeans back “in.” This includes straight leg, stovepipe, boyfriend, mom, dad, flare, and all other styles of non-skinny denim. And yes, there is a difference between mom jeans and dad jeans.

Okay, you get it, the younger generation have declared what’s fashionable… for now, at least. But many of us in the Millennial and Gen X age groups have been married to our skinny jeans for over a decade! I totally get it. It’s like the middle part. Side parts were popular until recently when some teenage rando declared it uncool. I have a middle part so I can’t really complain, but I also love my skinny jeans and the thought of being not fashion-forward anymore if I wear them is NOT okay. I mean, fashion is my business!

So, I did it; I was brave and tried the non-skinny jeans out. I even sourced a couple pairs for Neutral Rebel so you can try them, too! Although I discussed a few styling tips in the previous blog post, I want to offer some outfit inspo to make this new addition to your closet even better.

1) Fitted Sleeveless Bodysuit

I find that pairing wider leg jeans with a slim-fitting top is super flattering. Unlike skinny jeans, which are tight all over, wide-leg jeans have more volume throughout. It depends on the cut and style of the jean, but our Before the Dawn Jeans, for example, fit slim through the hip and thigh and flare out slightly below the knee.

Counteracting this volume with a tighter silhouette on top can elevate your look. So, if you want to wear these jeans to a nice dinner, style them with this top, throw on some heeled sandals, and you’re good to go!

2) Oversized Graphic Tee

The oversized graphic tee is a 2020–21 youth fashion staple. They can be worn knotted in the front with jeans, with biker shorts for an athleisure/streetwear look, or at home as lounge or sleepwear!

As the bodysuit elevates the wide-leg jeans, an oversized graphic tee dresses them down and brings a cool, effortless, edgy or bohemian vibe. I would French tuck the tee or knot it to reduce some of that volume I mentioned earlier. Wide-leg jeans can make your legs look shorter, so French tucking is a great way to lengthen and slim your leg line!

3) Shacket

Shackets are probably one of the biggest trends of 2020–21. I always wear them as a jacket rather than a shirt, but I love that they’re lightweight so they’re perfect for those days where the weather is not too hot or too cold.

I like pairing a shacket with non-skinny jeans because it gives me a relaxed, cool-girl look while also being functional. Tie it around your waist when you get warm and suddenly, you’re a 90s movie star!

For fall/winter, go for a heavier flannel or sherpa shacket. For spring/summer, try our lightweight corduroy style!
