The Fall Trend to Look Out For In 2021
The 1970s came back strong earlier this year with the return of curtain bangs (think Farrah Fawcett), wide-leg jeans (refer to our blog post here), and other trends.
Wondering what trends will be big for Fall? It looks like the 70s retro style is going to keep going strong this season. Your freshly cut curtain bangs and middle part don’t have to go anywhere anytime soon! 🎉
When I think of the 70s, my mind immediately goes to a color palette. I don’t know if we only have Hollywood to thank for this or if it’s true, but it seems like everything in the 70s was brown, mustard yellow, and pumpkin orange. Throw in some rich jewel tones like emerald and that sums it up for me. This doesn’t just go for the fashion, either; it was walls (wood paneling!), furniture, carpet, the sepia tone camera filter — everything! That entire era was so warm.
So, for Fall, I’m going to play up those colors along with the classic 70s shapes that came back this year.
Here’s an example of a 70s-inspired outfit I would wear in the Fall to a winery or dinner out:
- Brown ribbed mock-neck top
- Light wash wide-leg jeans
- White leather pointed booties
- Oversized shacket

I know people are thinking, “Okay, I figured out how to style wide-leg jeans with sandals and sneakers, but how do I do it with BOOTS?” I understand your fear — hear me out.
The truth is that, in my opinion, it is as difficult as it sounds because in order to look right, the pants and the boots have to be the right length and height together, respectively. But I think it’s worth it.
I have one pair of wide-leg jeans that reach the floor. I wouldn’t wear these with flat shoes because they would be would be dragging on the floor, have multiple breaks in the leg, and look sloppy as a result. I keep these specifically for heeled boots/booties because if you’re having a “I want to feel like a 70s supermodel and look seven feet tall” moment, this look is 🔥.
If the leg is wide enough on your jeans, you may even be able to fit a pair of knee-high boots underneath them if they’re tight to your calf. That will definitely keep you warm in the winter!
Cropped denim is also extremely popular right now, which includes cropped wide-leg jeans. You may not own full-length wide-leg denim and that’s fine! To style cropped jeans with booties for a fall 70s vibe, I would find a bootie that has a short shaft, ideally right below the ankle. If you try to pair a tall bootie with cropped jeans, it will make you look frumpy, short, and larger than you are. Leaving that little sliver of skin at the ankle exposed is essential to breaking up the elements of your outfit, adding dimension, and showing you do have a dainty ankle under all that fabric!
This widening/shortening effect doesn’t happen with floor-length jeans because the leg line is longer. Instead of cutting off mid-shin, these jeans draw the eye from waist to toe. It’s a super flattering look!
