Transitioning Your Winter Wardrobe into Spring

Wow, it’s almost April! We’re already past the one-year “anniversary” of COVID-19, for lack of a better word.

And you know the old saying: “April showers bring May flowers.” 🌸 It’s springtime across the country, meaning plenty of rain but also warmer temperatures, blooming flowers, and the countdown to summer.

While we celebrate when spring comes around again, despite the usual onslaught of seasonal allergies, one of the toughest parts of the transition is the unpredictable weather. Neutral Rebel is based in Washington, D.C., right in the Mid-Atlantic. That means we can start the week at 40 degrees with rain, and by Friday have a 70-degree & sunny day. I know this isn’t the only city that experiences this kind of crazy weather throughout the season! Like me, you might be tempted to put away your wool coats and boots when you enjoy that first warm, sunny day — but don’t be so quick! You’ll soon realize that was a tease, and the forecast will jump right back down to 40 in no time…

So, we’re balancing between a winter wardrobe and summer wardrobe and trying to figure out what to wear on a humid, 65-degree rainy day. You’ve come to the right place if you need some help on this front.

Here are Neutral Rebel’s tips for transitional winter-to-spring style:

  • White jeans & sweaters. For those cold spring days when winter wants to stick around just a little longer, one way to make your cold-weather style feel more spring-friendly is to incorporate white denim. White jeans with a grey or taupe chunky knit is refined and classy, while feeling airy for spring because of the light & neutral color palette.
  • Parkas & light wash jeans. Don’t put your puffer coats away just yet! Make them feel more suitable for spring by pairing them with light-wash denim (refer to our last blog post on the latest jean trend) or a casual pair of joggers (these are our favorite!).
  • Boots & dresses. Those knee-high boots don’t need to go back in the boxes. Keep your legs warm but the layers light on date night or GNO by styling your over-the-knee or ankle boots with a cute, ribbed midi dress, like this one.
  • Light colors. Like we touched on in the first tip, light colors feel… well… lighter! Winter is dark and heavy; the days are short and the seasonal depression is real. Spring lightens the mood with longer, warmer days. Showcase that in your style with a lighter color palette, donning more airy neutrals like heather grey, white and cream, taupe and khaki, and sage green (a personal fave).
  • Trade a beanie for a baseball cap. The spring winds in D.C. are no joke! It’s not quite cold enough for a heavy wool beanie most days, but it feels warmer to have a hat on. Try styling a parka with some light-wash jeans, sneakers, and a baseball cap rather than a beanie — you’ll look trendy and ready for spring!
